I see that no one has answered your post after three months. I am also looking for a way to get friends within the game because I don't know anyone outside of the game that is playing.
I have been away from the game for several years. We used to be able to get friends within the gaming community. Also, most of my buildings and garden size are gone. Now I have to start over. Terrible really. It is now my understanding that you can only get friends who are contacts on your facebook page. Which nobody on my facebook page plays the game. However, there is hope. I think if we send each other friend requests and accept than we can build a "neighbor" base. If anybody has a better idea or workaround let me know. I am not looking for "Facebook" friends to chat with outside of the game. Only to build my Neighbor base.

I believe you have to add friends on your facebook page in order for them to join your neighborhood. Basically, you have to solicit yourself.
